On Tuesday, October 1 the Lyon County Board of Commissioners passed motions that will allow Curbside Recycling to continue WITHOUT INTERRUPTION. Southwest Sanitation will continue to pick up curbside recycling on the same schedule for the month of October while the County Board works out a new agreement to start November 1, 2019. This page will be updated as details are finalized.
COLLECTION SCHEDULE
Starting November 1, curbside recycling will be collected Every-Other-Week. Please see the image below for schedule details for the remainder of 2019. Simply put, all Lyon County residents with curbside recycling will be collected the same week; (the "ON" week), with NO curbside recycling collection occurring during the "OFF" week. A direct mailing with the calendar below was sent ot all County postal mail addresses. Please call our office if you need another copy.

PAY ATTENTION TO PLASTIC
Just because its plastic does not mean its recyclable in Lyon County. Food and Beverage containers with a "resin code" symbol are acceptable. Other plastic containers such as shampoo and detergent bottles are acceptable. If the plastic container did not come from your kitchen or bathroom it likely cannot be recycled. We have seen everything from dart boards to keyboards to kid toys or garden pots in the recycling containers. THOSE ITEMS ARE NOT RECYCLABLE.
ALL CONTAINERS MUST BE EMPTY AND RINSED ! (FYI; peanut butter is not recyclable... use a spatula to clean it out). It does not have to be spotless; quick rinse of a cleaned out container is acceptable.
Garage fluid containers (oil, antifreeze, seafoam, etc.) are NOT recyclable.
NO BAGS
Plastic bags have become an enormous problem for recycling processing facilities. Plastic bags CANNOT be used to contain other recyclables.
NO STYROFOAM
Styrofoam CANNOT be put in recycling containers. This includes carts and community recycling drop-off containers.
Lyon County is in the process of implementing a styrofoam recycling program, however, styrofoam to be recycled MUST BE DELIVERED TO LYON COUNTY PUBLIC WORKS. Styrofoam will NOT be allowed in recycling carts, or at community drop sites. Please call our office for details.
NO SHREDDED PAPER
Shredded paper CANNOT be disposed in recycling containers. Lyon County has a partnership with Advance Opportunities to recycle shredded paper. Please call the Environmental Department, or Advance Opportunities for details.
COMMUNITY DROP SITES
Lyon County has maintained 14 Community Recycling Collection Sites for many years. (LOCATIONS INFORMATION HERE). Some locations have sheds, but most locations had large closed dumpsters with side doors. These large containers and some sheds will be replaced in the coming months. These sheds and collection sites are to be used by RESIDENTS ONLY !!! NO recycling from Businesses, Churches, Schools, or other non-residential sources.
May 24th, 2019
Spring Road Restrictions have been removed for most Lyon County highways. Signs remaining in place will dictate legal weight limits. Please contact the Lyon County Highway Department at 507-532-8205 with any questions.

Lake Sarah in Murray County (MN) has what officials are describing as a 3-5 year old infestation of Zebra Mussels. Some believe they may have arrived on a dock that was purchased from an owner living on a laker infested with zebra mussels. Although this is speculation, this situation validates the need to Clean, Drain, & Dry ALL Boats, Docks, and Water Recreation Items.
Zebra Mussels were transported through ballasts of cargo ships through the great Lakes region, which then resulted in the transport from great lakes to nearby lakes and streams. As we see today they are still being transported by way of boats and other watercraft, docks, and waterfowl hunting equipment. These are all possible ways of transport and do not suggest that any one category is responsible.
Please PULL DRAIN PLUGS, and REMOVE ALL AQUATIC VEGETATION, when leaving and entering another water body.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SPRING LOAD RESTRICTIONS
March 15, 2019
Lyon County is announcing that truck spring load restrictions will be starting Monday
March 18, 2019 for all Lyon County Highways.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation has announced the starting date of spring load
restrictions in the SOUTH FROST ZONES starting on Friday, March 15, 2019 at 12:01 a.m.
In general, spring load restrictions on local roads (county, city and township roads) follow the
same dates as the State Trunk Highways, however any local road can be restricted at any time
during the year so long as the restricted load limit is posted. This depends on the condition of the
roads. The local road authority can keep spring restrictions on longer if they deem them
necessary. MnDOT can keep state highways weight-restricted for a maximum of 8 consecutive weeks.
The Lyon County 2019 Spring Load Restriction map can be viewed at the Lyon County website at
www.lyonco.org. A regional map showing neighboring counties’ road postings is also available.
Please contact the Lyon County Highway Department at (507) 532-8205 for further information.
